Week in Review 18-22

The Week in Review
November 18-22, 2013

The children have been investigating how to control the flow of water. We provided the children with the water table, cups, plastic pegboard, pipe cleaners and plastic bottles with a hole cut out. The children used the cups to pour the water into the plastic bottles. They discovered that the amount of water determined whether or not the water would travel through all three of the plastic bottles. The children noticed all the bottles had to be aligned in order for the water to travel from the top of the pegboard to the bottom. They worked on manipulating the bottles to align with the hole at the top of each bottle.

Mrs. Tyler and the children have been investigating how water affects various substances. Mrs. Tyler provoked the children’s thinking with wood chips, drink mix, shells and laundry detergent. The children experimented with materials by adding water to each substance individually. The children discovered that the drink mix and laundry detergent “disappeared” into the water. The water did not change the wood-chips and shells. This week Ms. Tyler will be working on how materials absorb water.

The children have been investigating how the clay takes on different textures. We provoked the children’s thinking with lace, fabric and mesh. The children pressed the various textures into the clay. They discovered if they used a lot of force to push the texture into the clay, the imprint would be more prominent. Many children noticed how the mesh, lace and canvas created better imprints because they were textured and porous.
